Outdoor ceremonies are beautiful, but live music outdoors comes with a few practical questions that don't apply indoors. Here's what to think through before your date.

Sound Projection Outdoors

Sound behaves differently outside — there are no walls to help carry it, and wind or ambient noise (traffic, other events nearby) can compete with it. A solo cellist can typically project well for small to mid-sized outdoor gatherings without amplification, but larger guest counts or venues with background noise may need a small sound system. Ask your musician what they'd recommend for your specific guest count and space.

Weather Contingency

This is the single most important logistics question for an outdoor ceremony: what happens if it rains?

Ask whether your musician has their own rain plan (many string instruments can't be exposed to direct moisture — it damages the wood).
Confirm with your venue whether there's an indoor backup space, and whether your musician has already been told about it.
Discuss this before your date, not on the morning of — last-minute scrambling over a weather call adds stress no one needs.

Heat and Direct Sun

Extended direct sun exposure isn't ideal for a wood instrument either, particularly for a full afternoon booking. If your ceremony is outdoors in warmer months, ask about shade options near the performance spot—under a tent, tree cover, or a structure— for both the instrument and comfortable performance conditions.

Power Needs

If any amplification or electric instrument is involved, confirm there's an accessible power source, or that your musician has battery-powered equipment that doesn't rely on one.
